The juniper (Juniperus Communis) is a small tree that grows to a height of 30 to 100 cm and thrives in central and southern Europe, North Africa and Asia. It is characterised by its needle-like leaves and blue berries, which are ripe only in the second year of growth, so that both immature green and ripe blue berries can be found on the same bush. Juniper was valued by the ancient Egyptians, who used it in mummification and its twigs as an incense for physical and spiritual cleansing.

Essential oils are volatile fragrant essences that plants store in their petals, leaves, fruits, bark and roots - juniper essential oil is thus obtained by distilling its berries.
