Vaginal pH test helps in the evaluation of intimate area infections

Vaginal infections are relatively common and recurrent problems in women of all ages. Finding abnormal acidity in vaginal discharge can help assess whether vaginal symptoms may be due to infection, which may require further follow-up by a healthcare professional.

Symptoms of vaginal infections include an itchy and red vagina, vaginal discharge with a specific appearance and unpleasant odor, a painful vulva, and pain with intercourse.

Acidic or normal vaginal pH (between 3.8 and 4.5) is an essential requirement for the optimal functioning of the vagina's own protective system, which naturally prevents infection by pathogenic microorganisms and the development of vaginal infections. Thus, any pH value above 4.4 may indicate that you have been exposed to an infection in the intimate area.

Normal vaginal pH is between 3.8 and 4.4 - anything higher can be an indicator of a vaginal infection.

Use

To perform the test:

• Before performing the test, warm up all parts of the test kit to room temperature (15-30°C).
• After removing the test cartridge from the bag, you must use it within 1 hour. The best result is obtained if you perform the test immediately after opening.
• Place the test cartridge on a clean and flat table or take it in your free hand.
• Pull the tip of the stick (after removing the stick) at least 5 times through the sample window on the test cartridge, making sure to collect enough secretion when removing the stick.
• Read the result as soon as the measured area is still wet. Compare the color on the pH measuring surface with the color scale on the bag and record the value that is closest to the color on the test unit. After evaluating the results, properly dispose of the used test cartridge and stick.

Interpretation of results - pH scale:

• Normal pH: Vaginal pH in the range of 3.8-4.4 is within the normal range. The color of the indicator on the test is yellow-green.
• Abnormal pH level: Vaginal pH above 4.4 or below 3.8 is outside the normal/healthy range. When the pH is above 4.4, the color of the indicator is green-blue and when the pH is below 3.8, it is bright yellow.
