Unlike sea salt, this salt is not created overnight - it is the result of a long process of evaporation of seawater that took place millions of years ago. When the ancient ocean covered what is now the Himalayas, minerals from the soil and rocks were concentrated by the sun's heat in salt deposits, which were then buried under layers of sediment and rock. Under the pressure of tectonic movements, these deposits were pushed towards the surface where they were subjected to erosion and weathering while becoming accessible for mining.
